Week commencing 20th October
Welcome back! Here are some of the things we have been getting up to in Ash class this week…
We have followed up on our vegetable soup preparation by making monster potions! We have done this is maths by reading simple recipes and adding the right number of cups to our potion – we made stinky stew, cat tail casserole and ogre omelette using different coloured ingredients. This linked into our previous work on colour mixing as we could watch the colour change of the potion.
We have also made potions in phonics by sounding out silly items which could go into our potion – some of us have been brave and had a go at writing too! The sounds we learned in phonics this week were “g, o, c, k”.
We have read the story of the Rainbow Fish and talked about why sharing is important and how we can share around the classroom. We have also made a large Rainbow Fish collage and added colourful scales showing pictures of us sharing.
We have been investigating different types of squash by carving vegetables including pumpkins. We have used magnifying glasses to look at the seeds.
Outside we decided to build a train and have been using our imaginations to visit lots of different places – all aboard!
Is half term! But the week following we will be learning about Diwali and making pottery Divas. We will also be learning about bonfire night and firework safety and thinking about Remembrance Day. Our overarching topic for term 2 is “Tell a Story, Sing a Song” so we will be beginning to read lots of different traditional tales.
We have a long break from school so please make sure we are doing lots of reading – keeping the same book for a whole week is a really good way to develop our story telling skills and encourage us to build upon our story telling by adding in more detail with each re-telling. Keep practising counting and looking out for different numbers with us – our maths challenge cards are available for more ideas. We could also make a half term diary by taking photos of the things we do and trying to add some simple words to them.
Have a lovely break and don’t forget to check back soon!
