Autumn Term - Week 10

Week commencing 17th November


Welcome back! Here are some of the things we have been getting up to in Ash class this week…


This week our topic has been the story of The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

We have listened carefully to the story and talked about the different characters. We have practised telling the story using different props such as puppets and toys. We have made some story maps to show the sequence of events in the story and have practised telling the story using these.


In maths we have been looking at shape. We have talked about 2D shapes and their different properties such as numbers of sides, corners and whether they were straight or curved. We have been describing shapes for our partners to guess using mathematical language.

We have been using shapes to make goats for our new fairy tales display and experimenting with ways of arranging shapes of different sizes.

We have also begun to look at 3D solids such as cube, cuboid, pyramid, cylinder, sphere and cone. We have been talking about and building with these shapes.               


In phonics we have learned the sounds “l, ll, le, ss”. We are now beginning to read simple captions by sounding out each word turn and are starting to learn our tricky words to make our reading easier.


We created our own class troll called “Boogie Ogre” and then had a go at painting our own trolls in the art area – they were very scary!


Next week…

We will be reading the story of “The Three Little Pigs” and having a go at writing the story.. In phonics we will be learning the sounds “j, v, w”.  We have our class trip on Thursday to see “Kipper’s Snowy Day”. At school we will be using this experience to practise speaking in the past tense.


At home…

Please continue to read with us every night – don’t forget to sign our reading records because this shows our teachers we have read. Have a go at practising our red tricky words with us too – we will be seeing these more and more at school.


Ask us lots of questions about our trip to see Kipper and model correct use of the past tense for us if we get it wrong e.g. Child : “we wented on a big coach” Adult: “You WENT on a big coach…”
