Week commencing 9th February
Wow, what a busy week! This week in Ash we have been up to all sorts of exciting things. We have been learning all about Chinese New Year, Valentine ’s Day and been taking part in maths week.
On Monday Mrs Ramm came in to talk to us about Chinese New Year. She told us the story of where the celebration came from, talked about how Chinese people celebrate and even taught us some Chinese words! Following her visit, we got up to lots of different craft and imaginative Chinese New Year related activities…
Making Chinese lanterns
Making Chinese masks
A chopsticks challenge!
Practising Chinese writing
Making Chinese dragons
We also learned a Dragon Dance in PE and tried some Chinese cooking – yum!
For maths week we had a visit from “The Happy Puzzle Company” who set us lots of maths puzzle challenges which we had to complete in teams.
This week in maths we have also been learning to count in steps of 1, 2, 5 and 10. We have been using 100 squares to help us with this.
In phonics we have learned the sounds “er, ow, ear, air and ure”. We have now come to the end of learning new sounds for the moment and next term we will be working to consolidate our phonic knowledge through both reading and writing.
Our transport book has now been produced with all of our fantastic transport facts inside and our classroom has been looking lovely with all of our hot air balloons and lanterns hanging around.
Is half term – phew! We are all looking forward to a good rest. Next term our topic will be “The World Around Us” where we will be covering topics including planting and growing and people who help us.
Please continue to read with us every night and help us spot those digraphs and tricky trigraphs! We are now becoming brave and confident writers so do encourage us to practise our writing by sounding new words and writing the sounds down in the order we hear them. You could even help us to keep a simple diary by taking photos of our week (or drawing pictures) and helping us to write a simple caption to go with them.
Have a brilliant half term and don’t forget to check back soon!
