Happy New Year everyone!
The theme in Saplings for this half term is ‘Journeys / Let’s Travel’ and then after half term it will be ‘The World Around Us.’
We have been busy looking at different forms of transport and getting around. We started off with reading ‘Noah’s Ark’ and the children helped to turn the home corner into Noah’s Ark and made super animals using the ‘Popoids’ construction materials and then they each wrote a label identifying their animal - well done children! Reading this story prompted us to learn how to count in twos, eg hands, feet, eyes, ears; it kept us very busy!
In our next story we went on a ‘Train Ride’ and we discovered the words in the story took on the rhythm of a train moving. We turned our train ride into a shape discovering journey and we thought about the language used to describe shapes, eg “a circle is round and it has no corners”, “a triangle has 3 corners and 3 sides”. We also went on an exciting shape walk around the school to see how many different shapes we could find!
Some children helped Miss Hudson to create a train in our outside area using building blocks and chairs. This was very popular as the children went on different journeys; they bought tickets and enjoyed a meal on the train! We also had fun with junk modelling making our own forms of transport!
Mrs Archer, a visiting gymnastics teacher, has been teaching us some fun new gymnastics routines which we have been practising in our Thursday PE sessions. It has helped us to be more controlled with our movements and in making body shapes.
